She served as an assistant public defender, won a tough statewide race to become a district court judge, became a member of the court of appeals, and now serves as the current chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court.

Her mother taught her that no door of opportunity should ever be closed to her and, that with hard work, determination, and faith, she could accomplish anything.
