I’m Carron Murrell, a health care worker at one of Project HOPE’s local partner clinics in Houston. Back in 2017, I cared for people who lost everything after Hurricane Harvey devastated the city. Now I’m ensuring that people in my community are protected from COVID-19 with vaccines.

Without Project HOPE, we wouldn’t be able to reach all the people who have been left behind by other vaccine efforts — migrant, low-income and refugee communities who often already don’t get accurate information or the health care they need to stay safe.

Thanks to Project HOPE, San Jose Clinic was able to hire me and two other people to expand our COVID-19 vaccination program into Houston’s refugee and migrant communities. We go door-to-door, providing accurate information about the importance of getting a vaccine. It’s so gratifying to earn people’s trust and help them protect their health.

One of the people I vaccinated was a man named Khalil, a former Afghani soldier. He and his wife spent 8 days at the airport in Kabul before they were evacuated and resettled here last August. Nothing can replace the feeling I get inside when I help someone like Khalil. This is so much more than a job to me.
