John,

Here are some updates from the last few days you may have missed.

Lawsuit Filed Against Florida’s New Congressional Map
Last week, the Florida Legislature returned to Tallahassee for a special session to pass DeSantis’ congressional map. Despite objections from Democrats, the Legislature passed the map and DeSantis signed it into law on Friday. [link removed]

Also on Friday, a lawsuit was filed against the map. The plaintiffs allege the map violates multiple provisions of Florida’s Fair District Amendment by favoring Republicans and diminishing the ability of Black Floridians to elect the representative of their choice. New York Appellate Court Strikes Down Congressional Map
Last Thursday, a New York appellate court issued a ruling in the lawsuit challenging New York’s new congressional and legislative maps. A trial court had previously overturned the districts, ruling that the New York Legislature did not follow the constitutional redistricting process. Additionally, the court found the congressional map was drawn with political bias. [link removed]

The appellate court disagreed with the trial court that the Legislature failed to follow the constitutional redistricting process but agreed that the congressional map was drawn with partisan intent. Accordingly, the appellate court reinstated the state’s legislative districts and preserved the ruling striking down the congressional map. Get more details here. [link removed]

The case has already been appealed to the state’s highest court, which will hold oral arguments toDAY at 11:00 a.m. ET. You can watch it here. [link removed]

Kansas Congressional Map Struck Down
Yesterday, a Kansas trial court judge struck down the state’s new congressional map. The judge concluded that the map is an extreme partisan gerrymander and dilutes minority voting strength in violation of the Kansas Constitution. Read more here. [link removed]
