Elon Musk Buys Twitter for $44 Billion
From the story: Twitter Inc. on Monday accepted Elon Musk’s bid to take over the company, which would give the world’s richest man control over the social-media network where he is also among its most influential users. The $44 billion deal marks the close of a dramatic courtship and a change of heart at Twitter, where many executives and board members initially opposed Mr. Musk’s takeover approach. The two sides worked through the night to hash out a deal in which Mr. Musk plans to take Twitter private. Mr. Musk will bring his commitment to a more hands-off approach on speech to a company that has struggled to reconcile freewheeling conversation with content that appeals to advertisers ( Wall Street Journal). Elon Musk: I hope that even my worst critics remain on Twitter, because that is what free speech means ( Twitter). Chris Buskirk: Elon has a long track record of being very much in favor of free speech and believing that that is essential to any type of representative government. And so, I think that he is a good actor here ( Daybreak Daily).

Left Melts Down Over Elon Musk Buying Twitter
Leftists and mainstream media reacted exactly how you’d think at the news of Elon Musk purchasing Twitter ( Townhall). Washington Free Beacon: Stelter on Elon Musk buying Twitter: “If you get invited to something where there are no rules, where there is total freedom for everybody, do you actually want to go to that party or are you going to decide to stay home” ( Twitter)? NYT reporter Charles Blow: Looks like I’m about to say goodbye to Twitter as well. I’ve been pulling back a bit from social media anyway. This will be just the push I need to go all the way on this app ( Twitter). The Daily Wire: Some members of the media joined the chorus of those stating they would leave Twitter if Musk bought the site ( Daily Wire).

Federal Judge Temporarily Bars Biden From Lifting Title 42
Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt: A huge victory for border security ( Twitter). National Review: A federal judge in Louisiana has blocked the Biden administration from ending the expulsion of illegal immigrants under Title 42, less than a month before the pandemic-era public health measure was set to end. Drawn from the Public Health Act of 1944, the measure allows the U.S. to summarily expel immigrants who are deemed to pose a risk to “public health.” During the coronavirus pandemic, it was used by the Trump and Biden Administrations to remove tens of thousands of illegal immigrants outside the normal deportation process ( National Review). The Daily Wire: Schmitt joined 20 other state attorneys general last week in a challenge to the Biden administration after it announced plans to scrap Title 42 on May 23 ( Daily Wire).

Supreme Court Hears Case on High School Football Coach Fired for Praying After Games
From the story: The U.S. Supreme Court seemed ready during oral arguments Monday to side with a high school coach who was fired for praying at the 50-yard-line after football games, although the expanse of the court’s decision was less than certain ( Christian Headlines). ABC News: The school district didn’t learn of Kennedy’s practice until 2015. It told him then that he needed to stop praying with students or engaging in overtly religious activity while still “on duty” as a coach. After Kennedy continued to pray on the field, he was placed on paid leave ( ABC News). Coach Joseph Kennedy: Two days after my last postgame prayer, the school suspended me, even though it acknowledged there was “no evidence that students have been directly coerced to pray with” me, and that I had complied with its directives “not to intentionally involve students.” The school then gave me the first negative evaluation in my file, adding: “Do Not Rehire.” I was fired for taking a knee in prayer by myself at the 50-yard line for 15 to 30 seconds after high-school football games. Unless the U.S. Supreme Court rules in my favor, teachers could be fired for praying over their lunch in the cafeteria if students can see them. That doesn’t seem like the Constitution I fought for in the Marine Corps ( Wall Street Journal). Attorney Lori Windham: Americans express their faith in public all the time. Muslims and Sikhs grow beards, Catholics wear crucifixes, and Orthodox Jews wear yarmulkes. Should those religious expressions be banned from public schools? Of course not ( Twitter).

Senator Manchin’s Approval Rating Spiked Since Biden Took Office
From the story: Sen. Joe Manchin, the West Virginia Democrat who has had an outsized influence over President Joe Biden’s agenda, has dramatically impressed voters back home. The centrist lawmaker’s approval rating jumped from 40% to 57% in West Virginia over the past year — the biggest increase of any senator. The double-digit boost largely stems from West Virginia Republicans. At the beginning of Biden’s term, only 35% of GOP voters in the red state approved of Manchin. Now, that figure has nearly doubled, with 69% of Republicans in support of his job performance ( Business Insider). Morning Consult: While Manchin has made up ground on the right, he’s angered West Virginia Democrats, 54% of whom now disapprove of him, up from 32% around this time last year. However, he’s also made large gains with independents over that time frame, with an approval rating rising from 31% to 50% ( Morning Consult).

Poll: Two-Thirds of San Francisco Voters Plan to Recall D.A. Chesa Boudin in June
From the story: Over two-thirds (68%) of likely primary voters say they will vote yes to recall Boudin. Support is widespread with 64% of registered Democrats, 64% of voters under 50, and 71% of voters over 50 saying they support the recall today ( Recall Chesa Boudin). Fox News: Fatal and non-fatal shooting incidents jumped 33% from 2020 to last year the San Francisco Chronicle reported in January. Homicides rose from 48 to 56. In 2022, property crime is up 10.4% from this time last year ( Fox News). NBC: NBC Bay Area’s investigative streaming series, “Saving San Francisco” found burglaries are the highest they have been in recent history and smash-and-grab car break-ins were up 170% last year. San Francisco Mayor London Breed addressed the rise in crime with NBC Bay Area’s senior investigative reporter Bigad Shaban in “Saving San Francisco.” “I think that there’s been too much focus on the perpetrators of some of the violent crimes and we need to start concentrating more on supporting the victims of this city than we are supporting in some cases, sadly, the criminals,” Breed said on Saving San Francisco. For now, businesses in the city are doing what they feel they need to do, to protect themselves ( NBC). The recall vote will happen June 7, 2022.

California Preparing to Be a “Haven” For Out-of-State Abortions
In truth, it will be no haven at all. From the story: California abortion clinics are building new facilities closer to transit hubs and training more staff. A package of a dozen abortion rights bills moving through the Legislature could expand the number of providers, provide financial assistance to women traveling to California to terminate their pregnancies, and legally protect the doctors who treat them ( CalMatters). Townhall : In November, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said he was looking to boost the state’s “abortion infrastructure” to accommodate more out-of-state patients. Newsom and other pro-abortion lawmakers formed a coalition called the California Future of Abortion Council where it outlined several policies to implement for people to terminate their pregnancies. This included increased public spending toward abortion services and patients traveling from out-of-state to obtain one ( Townhall).

The US would Like to See Russia’s Sphere of Influence Diminished
The Wall Street Journal: The Biden administration’s aim in the Ukraine war is to see Russia’s military capabilities degraded and Ukraine’s strengthened, to prevent Moscow from attempting to conquer territory by force in the future, U.S. officials said Monday. “We want to see Russia weakened to the degree that it can’t do the kinds of things that it has done in invading Ukraine,” Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said after he and Secretary of State Antony Blinken became the highest-level U.S. officials to visit the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv since Russia invaded Ukraine ( Wall Street Journal). From the Washington Post: Blinken and Austin said their visit to the Ukrainian capital, which Russian forces were unable to capture despite an attempt in the initial weeks of the war, highlighted the failure of Putin’s aims in Ukraine ( Washington Post).

Arizona Governor Ducey Signs Bill Ensuring Clergy May Visit Patients in Long-term Care Facilities
Alliance Defending Freedom: The following quote may be attributed to Alliance Defending Freedom Legal Counsel Greg Chafuen regarding Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey’s signing Monday of HB 2449, a bill that ensures that residents of long-term care facilities are able to receive visits from clergy during a state of emergency, an extension of protections passed last year for patients in hospitals: “The religious freedom of Arizonans should be protected, especially during a public crisis. Over the past two years, too many people were denied visits from clergy, even in end-of-life situations. HB 2449 ensures that this does not happen in long-term care facilities like nursing homes by allowing residents to receive visits from clergy. Residents in vulnerable situations deserve to have their religious freedom protected. Their right to exercise religion should not be denied or violated merely because they are in a facility receiving care” ( Alliance Defending Freedom).

Dinesh D’Souza: Oil drilling is picking up steam in Texas. And that is actually very good news for all of us. It actually should be good news for the Biden administration, but they don’t see it that way. In fact, I just saw Biden and he was saying, we kind of have to get away from this kind of...
