ANNOUNCEMENTS

Six more days until one of the most important socialist events of the year!

Sunday, May 1 @ 10:00am

May Day, or International Workers Day, is a holiday to celebrate workers and recognize the ongoing struggle for worker power and worker rights. As socialists, we recognize that workers have built the world. On Sunday, May 1, DSA-Los Angeles honors the contributions of workers, immigrants, and all those who fight for a socialist Los Angeles at the annual May Day rally and march.

For this year's coalition of organizations, the theme is “Essential & United for Justice.” We will be lifting up the work we have been doing throughout the pandemic: from supporting immigrants, to unionization efforts, to fighting evictions, all of us united in solidarity as the working class.

Join us at the intersection of Olympic Blvd and Broadway Blvd in Downtown LA to march alongside DSA-LA and fellow workers! Wear red or a DSA shirt!

Public Transportation: We highly encourage marchers to take the Metro Blue/Expo Line and exit the Pico Station stop. There is a 0.7 mile walk from the Pico station to Olympic & Broadway Blvd. Look for the flatbed truck, signs and banners for May Day on Spring Street.

Need a shirt for May Day? We're having a sale!!!

We're having a big merch sale to make room for some exciting new DSA-LA swag!

Hang out with comrades at the MAY DAY AFTERPARTY!

Sunday, May 1 @ 3:30pm

Come hang out with DSA comrades and enjoy some food and drinks after the march! Look for the big DSA banner, and RSVP to get updates on the exact location within the park where we set up.

Still don't really know what May Day is all about? Check out this documentary!

Saturday, April 30 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

We Mean to Make Things Over: A History of May Day is a new half-hour documentary video exploring how May Day became a workers’ holiday all over the world, except in the United States—despite the fact that the tragic events that inspired the holiday occurred in this country. It will premiere on Zoom at 7:00 PM on Saturday, April 30.

At a time when the labor movement is showing renewed signs of life, and the socialist left is the largest since the onset of the Cold War, the appearance of We Mean to Make Things Over is extremely timely.

Using hand drawn illustrations by Berkeley artist Jos Sances, archival images and animation by L.A.-based animator and DSA-LA member Paul Zappia, edited by award-winning PBS documentary filmmaker Rick Tejada-Flores, and a compelling musical score by Sokio, We Mean to Make Things Over is an educational and entertaining tour of a long-suppressed story from American working-class history.

Writer/Director Fred Glass is a labor historian, retired union communications director, and member of East Bay DSA. He will introduce the video and answer questions afterward.

Hollywood Labor for Hugo Canvass

Saturday, April 30 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Hugo Soto-Martínez’s candidacy is an incredible opportunity to elect a longtime socialist union organizer and core chapter member; to activate hundreds of our members in a diverse, renter-heavy district; and to keep building coalitions with labor and broad social justice campaigns across Los Angeles.

If you’ve been to a few Hollywood Labor events, you’ve probably seen Hugo around, showing his support for our work backing the entertainment industry – so we want to make sure we have his back.

We’ll be meeting first in Elysian Park at Stadium Way & Academy Rd! If you’ve never canvassed before: we will provide you with a thorough training, pair you up with someone experienced/confident, and make sure you are comfortable going out. Don’t worry — we got you!
