Dear Avaazers,
Janika was raped, beaten to death with a concrete block, and dumped in her grandmother's yard. She was 14.
South Africa has one of the most horrific rape problems in the world, and it's getting worse -- the government recently called it a "national crisis"! But a
solution exists. And WE can bring it to life!A survivor of sexual violence has developed a simple 12-hour training, teaching boys about consent and how to stand up for women, while girls learn self-defence and how to spot risks. The impact is miraculous: amongst participants,
it's cut the number of rapes in HALF!Now they want to roll it out in South Africa, before taking it to the rest of the continent and beyond. But to do it, they need funds -- and they’re asking for our movement’s help.
If we raise enough, we can help them expand this game-changing programme --
creating the first African Hub dedicated to preventing rape -- and launch urgent campaigns to end violence against women globally. No girl should go through the horror that Janika faced. So
chip in now to help cut rape in half:
Worldwide,
one in three women have experienced sexual or physical abuse.
One in three. This programme is unique not only because it's low-cost and includes girls AND boys, but also because it's easily replicable across the world!
And
its results are striking. 74% of boys who went through the training in Nairobi, Kenya, successfully intervened to stop an assault in the year after. And organisers say it’s
prevented more than 300,000 assaults! The training has even attracted praise from some of the world’s top universities.
The plan to expand it is simple -- if we raise enough, we can:
- Set up the first African hub dedicated to rape prevention;
- Train and certify a top team of instructors to teach the “no means no” curriculum to thousands of South Africans;
- Provide legal, medical, and psychological support for survivors of sexual violence;
- Conduct groundbreaking research into how best to prevent sexual violence across Africa;
- Supercharge our campaigns to end violence against women globally.
For far too long, the culture of sexual violence has been a poison to human relations, feeding a deep imbalance between men and women everywhere. Now that we've found a way to help stop it, we won't let it go. Chip in now, and
let's make this the beginning of the end for the rape and sexual abuse epidemic:
Our movement has always striven for women's rights all over the world -- from fighting child marriage, to standing up for amazing female activists and campaigning against restrictive gender laws. Right now we have the opportunity to change the world our young girls and boys are growing up in for the better -- let’s do it together.
With hope and determination,
Sarah, Camille, Martyna, Bert, Joseph, Marigona and the rest of the Avaaz team
