John — Domestic workers do some of the most essential work there is: they care for our homes and loved ones. Because of the work they do, we have the freedom to go to work, live our lives and realize our dreams.

Despite all they do for us, the sad truth is that few U.S. workers fare worse than domestic workers.

Housecleaners, nannies, and caregivers in most states aren’t entitled to paid sick leave to take care of themselves or their families, aren’t allowed to take meal or rest breaks while on the job, and have no protection against losing pay if an employer cancels last minute.

The care sector, which is mostly comprised of Black, Latinx, Asian, and Indigenous women, is on track to be one of the fastest growing sectors in the next decade. These jobs will be a large share of the jobs of the future, yet racist legal exclusions dating back to slavery and Jim Crow have kept domestic workers poorly paid, without benefits, and susceptible to discrimination and abuse.

Ten states and two major cities have passed domestic workers bills of rights or protections thanks to the powerful leadership of domestic worker organizing. But it’s beyond time for the federal government to provide real, comprehensive protections for these essential workers.

The federal Domestic Worker Bill of Rights covers major gaps in protecting domestic workers in the workplace by:

It’s never been more clear that domestic workers are essential to our lives. Passing a federal Domestic Workers Bill of Rights is one of the biggest goals for the domestic worker movement and we need your support to make it happen.

Supporters like you have stepped up each and every time we’ve asked for your support, and your action has made a huge difference.

Dignity, Unity, Power

The majority of domestic workers sit at the center of some of our nation’s most decisive issues because of who they are and what they do: they are women – mostly women of color, immigrants, mothers, and low-wage workers. They are impacted by almost every policy affecting the future of our economy, democracy and country.

Domestic workers can lead us toward a new, inclusive vision for the future for all of us -- and your grassroots support is the fuel that can get us there.
