Dear John,

Join Health Affairs for a Lunch and Learn

tomorrow at 1:00 PM EDT about a study in the April 2022 issue,
"Health-Related Social Needs Among Older Adults Enrolled In Medicare
Advantage (MA)."

Register here .

HIV And Health Care Spending

In the April issue of Health Affairs, José Figueroa and colleagues
examine the association of HIV with health care spending

and use among Medicare beneficiaries using 2016 Medicare claims data.

They report that Medicare enrollees with HIV who are receiving
antiretroviral therapy (ART) spend more than twice as much on medical
care as Medicare enrollees without HIV.

Higher costs are largely due to the cost of the ART drugs themselves.

"As the number of months with filled ART prescriptions increased among
patients with HIV, the absolute differences in spending related to
treatment of mental health and other medical chronic conditions narrowed
relative to beneficiaries without HIV," the authors write.
