John,
April’s already been a busy month for CREW—our Chief Counsel Donald Sherman testified before the House about a ban on Congressional stock ownership, we called on Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to recuse from cases involving the 2020 election or January 6 insurrection and we called for Ginni Thomas to be removed from the Library of Congress Trust Fund Board—a role she’s unfit to serve in given the revelations about her efforts to overturn the election.
And that was just in the first week of the month! Here’s what else we’ve been up to:
-
Truth Social, Donald Trump’s new social media platform, provides an opportunity for Trump and his allies to promote extremism and continue their attacks on our democracy. We sent a letter to Apple, calling for them to remove Truth Social from the App Store, because by doing business with Trump, they’re legitimizing and facilitating his dangerous, anti-democratic behavior.
-
Earlier this month, we learned that the official White House call logs from January 6, 2021 have a gap of more than 7 hours—the hours just before, during and after the attack on the Capitol. We know from reporting that Trump spoke to senators and others during this time—so why weren’t these calls officially recorded? If portions of the call log were destroyed, that would violate the law—so we sent a complaint to the Department of Justice, calling on them to investigate the gap in the call logs.

Banning Congressional stock ownership should be simple—but it’s not as straightforward as it sounds. If you have questions about what a ban would look like, or why it’s so important for members of Congress’ spouses to be included, we’ve got answers! Check out our new FAQ on Congressional stock trading.>>
As always, thank you for being a part of the fight for accountable, ethical government. Together, we can build a strong, secure democracy.
Thank you,
The CREW Team
