In late September this year, I spent a few days volunteering as an attorney to help asylum seekers at our Southern border. The stories broke my heart; they escape corrupt and violent countries only to be detained and separated from their families at our border. Immigration reform was already an important issue for our campaign, and my work at the border reinforced our commitment to creating a more just system.

So, as you can imagine, I share the public outrage over Iowa Rep. Steve King’s latest round of racist rhetoric. He compared immigrants to hunting dogs and called Dreamers drug mules.

Incumbent Sen. Joni Ernst isn’t much better. She supported the unnecessary deployment of thousands of troops to the southern border. Last year, she also joined a handful of ultra right-wing Senators in supporting ICE’s drastic measures there. I have yet to hear her advocate for citizenship for Dreamers or TPS recipients.

Brothers and sisters, we have a responsibility to unseat the Kings and Ernsts of this nation and replace them with people who represent our fundamental values and truths. We must uphold promises we’ve made to Dreamers and immigrant families and remember our nation has long been enriched by immigrants from every corner of the world.

With your help, we can make the immigration reforms we need, like:
* Ending private, for-profit detention centers
* Advocating for citizenship for DACA and TPS recipients
* Reinstating DACA and expanding protections and pathways to citizenship
* Ending family separation
* Using detention only for flight risks and violent offenders
* Holding ICE and CPB accountable for human rights violations
* Complying with our own due process laws
* Adhering to international laws regarding asylum seekers
