We're fighting to protect earned benefits
Hello John,

I really hope you saw Max's urgent call to action. This is such a dangerous time for earned benefits! We need to immediately put lawmakers on notice that Social Security and Medicare belong to the American people and must NOT be sacrificed to pay for other fiscal priorities.

If you haven't yet signed our Urgent Petition to Congress, please take a moment to do it now, so we can thwart any effort aimed at slashing seniors' earned benefits. And if you have already signed it: Thank you. You've taken the first step in ensuring your views are heard at the very highest levels of our government. Now please consider making a donation in whatever amount you can afford, so that we can continue our crucial work to protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare for current and future generations of Americans.

Sincerely,
Julie Lynch
Member Services Manager

Dear John,

It's no accident that some lawmakers are attacking Social Security and Medicare and labeling them as programs that are "going broke" and can only be "saved" with major, structural changes. As just one example, Senator Lindsey Graham (SC) recently said this about earned benefits: "We've gotta fix entitlements. We're in debt because we made promises we can't keep to Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid." The message is clear and consistent: "Fixes" ... "reforms" ... "restructuring" — whatever you want to call them — all add up to plans to destroy Social Security and Medicare.

It's not because the government can't afford Social Security and Medicare. The government found a way to afford massive new tax breaks benefiting huge, profitable corporations after all. And the fact is, our government can continue paying full benefits for many years to come. Rather, it's because politicians who voted for the Trump-GOP tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans need to find a way to pay for their costly $1.5 trillion tax scheme. And Social Security and Medicare is where the money is to pay for those tax breaks.

With pressure growing on Capitol Hill to slash benefits at a time when millions of older Americans are counting on their earned benefits for a secure retirement, I'm asking you to sign our Urgent Petition to Congress today, addressed to your U.S. Representative.

John, those who are ideologically opposed to Social Security and Medicare are now using soaring budget deficits as an excuse to break our government's commitment to millions of hard-working Americans and retirees. Incredibly, these lawmakers seem inclined to go back to a time when there was no social insurance safety net and poverty was the fate of so many people in old age.

Attacking programs that workers and retirees have paid into and earned over a lifetime of work is callous and cowardly. But it could work unless we fight back! So don't take your benefits for granted! Please sign our Urgent Petition to Congress and send a powerful message that Social Security and Medicare belong to America's workers, retirees and their families, not to the forces waging war against these essential programs.

Sincerely,

Max Richtman
