At a time when we see so many efforts to undermine democracy — and common decency — I was moved by a speech last week by Michigan State Senator Mallory McMorrow. We hope you will be as well, and will join us in speaking out against hate. In case you haven’t seen the video, the link is here.
The backstory is that when Senator McMorrow protested a fellow state senator’s reference to an anti-LGBTQ+ agenda while giving an invocation to a Senate session, McMorrow was accused by that senator in a fundraising email of wanting to groom and sexualize children.
Senator McMorrow subsequently took to the senate floor. “Hate wins,” she said, “when people like me stand by and let it happen. I won’t.”
Already hundreds of people have signed on to our Open Letter supporting Senator McMorrow’s call to speak out against hate.
What difference does signing a letter make?
Every time a leader like Senator McMorrow stands up and speaks out, their voice needs to be amplified. Every time a group like ours shows just how many people share these views, it sends a powerful message to the public, to the press, and to those who seek to do us harm: there are more people of decency and goodwill than you think.
As we keep doing our part to stand up and speak out in support of democracy and decency, please consider a donation. With the support of thousands around America — and around the world — Lawyers Defending American Democracy has been working every day to hold those who would undermine democracy accountable.
