Progressive journalist and activist Naomi Klein is the author of The Shock Doctrine and, most recently, On Fire: The (Burning) Case for a Green New Deal. She’s a leading thinker in the progressive movement and, according to Outside, “the godmother of the Green New Deal.”

Klein sat down with Civic Action founder Nick Hanauer and Senior Vice President Jessyn Farrell.

The planet is hurtling toward climate disaster, and we don’t have much time to turn it around. Thousands of scientists have declared a climate emergency; October 2019 was the second hottest on record (in a series of ever-warming record hot years); Venice is experiencing historic flooding; and large swaths of California are on fire. Climate change is everywhere, and the Green New Deal is the only tenable path forward.
Climate change isn’t just an environmental disaster; it’s the natural endpoint of conservative, trickle-down economic policies that plunder our environment, exacerbate economic inequality – and pit workers and jobs against environmental protections.
Klein argues that the Green New Deal is an opportunity to change the foundation of our society and address not only the climate crisis, but also economic inequality, racial inequities, and the gender disparity all at once. It’s our chance to take a bad situation and leverage it to heal much of what ails us as a society.
For the first time, we have a bold new plan that doesn’t sacrifice jobs for environmental protections, that prioritizes equality over the robber-baron mentality of our current economic system, and that does right for those who have suffered under the inequities of trickle-down policies.
