John,
On Friday, I was part of the Senate Democratic delegation sent to inspect the migrant facilities in McAllen, Texas. I was horrified by what I saw. We, as a nation, must do much better.
Children at these facilities have been denied the ability to brush their teeth, to bathe, or even to get a good night’s sleep. We’ve seen reports of people being denied enough food and water.
We’re treating people as criminals, even though the acting head of the CBP told us the vast majority of migrants coming into the U.S. have committed no crimes -- and coming to the U.S. seeking asylum is not illegal.
No one should be subject to these inhumane conditions, but no matter what you think about immigration policy, surely we can all agree that we should be protecting the children who arrive at our border.
My best,
Dick Durbin
