When coronavirus hit, Donald Trump took advantage of the horrible situation to completely block our borders.
He used a public health statute – Title 42 – to turn away asylum seekers and immigrants, forcing them to stay in Mexico.
Title 42 has been used to expel more than 1.7 million migrants and asylum seekers in the last two years. Thousands of asylum seekers have been kidnapped, raped, and tortured.
And now, as President Biden pledges to end Title 42, Republicans and conservative Democrats in Congress are teaming up to keep this cruel policy in place.
Republicans and centrist Democrats in Congress like South Texas Rep. Henry Cuellar are fighting to keep Trump’s xenophobic expulsion policy in place.
That’s why we’re supporting rural progressive Jessica Cisneros as she fights to oust anti-immigration incumbent Henry Cuellar.
Jessica lives along the US-Mexico border and has worked on immigration issues her entire career as a human rights lawyer in Texas. She understands that ending Title 42 is a key step in building a just asylum system in the United States.
