Dear John,
If you ask everyday Americans what the most important problems we're facing are, you'll get answers like inflation, the economy, and the war in Ukraine.
So what are Republicans talking about? "Don't say gay" and anti-trans laws. "Cancel culture." Criminalizing abortion. Banning books like Maus, a graphic novel about the Holocaust.
Sowing racism, homophobia, and transphobia creates life-or-death dangers for many people in our society. But for Republicans, this manufactured culture war serves to divert attention from the economic plunder by the ultra-rich.
Republicans want everyday Americans divided and living in fear of one another so we don't unite behind higher wages, better working conditions, and a fairer economy.
Friends, we cannot let them get away with this. We must fight back by speaking directly to the American people — diverting their attention from this manufactured culture war, and showing them what these Republican Party oligarchs are really up to.
Inequality Media Civic Action has built a following of millions across social media that we're using to distribute proven-effective viral videos and explainers that break through the culture war distractions and build support for policies that actually help everyday Americans.
Will you make a donation to help fight back against the Republican culture war and stop the looting of our country by the ultra-rich?
The culture wars now being orchestrated by the Republican Party emerge from the same narrative that economic oligarchs have used for centuries to divide and conquer working people.
Demagogues like Donald Trump, Ron DeSantis, and Tucker Carlson are selling the narrative that America's dominant white Christian culture is endangered by Black people, immigrants, transgender people, poor women seeking abortions, and schools that teach about America's history of racism.
And the worst part is, it's working, as polls continue to show working-class, rural voters drifting toward the Republican Party — even though the party of corporate tax cuts doesn't give a fig about working people.
To fight back, we must both directly address the very real economic problems that working-class people are facing and actively defend the marginalized communities being attacked by these demagogues. That means explaining in clear, easy-to-understand terms how corporate concentration and political corruption are the real threat, not queer and trans people, immigrants, or books about American history.
Inequality Media Civic Action was founded on the idea that we can use the internet and social media to communicate directly with everyday people about issues the corporate media will not cover.
That mission has never been more crucial than right now, as we see the GOP shamelessly capitalizing on people's anxieties as we emerge from the pandemic to push the interests of their ultra-rich funders.
Will you donate to Inequality Media Civic Action and fight back against Republican culture war demagoguery?
Thank you for helping to fight back, change the narrative, and build a robust movement of working people acting together for change,
Robert Reich
