Humanitarian crisis grows in the region and around the world ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

Dear friend,

Thank you for joining our global community supporting our critical humanitarian response in Ukraine and 40+ countries around the world. We’ll continue to provide regular status reports like this one to keep you updated on our work.

As the war in Ukraine creates more devastation by the day, we’re seeing the escalating impact it is having around the world. This month, the United Nations reported that global food prices had reached their highest levels ever and called the consequences of the conflict "a perfect storm of crises."

Ukraine and Russia are each major exporters of wheat, barley, maize, and sunflower oil. Countries that have limited resources to grow their own food, including those facing climate-caused natural disasters, rely on these exports. Rising food prices are putting more pressure on several countries where Mercy Corps serves.
In Lebanon, where people are still recovering from the 2020 Beirut explosion, Mercy Corps has been supporting small businesses with cash grants and economic opportunities for youth and women. But with food prices skyrocketing since the war in Ukraine, more families are at risk of hunger.

In Northwest Syria, where Mercy Corps has provided essential support since 2008, including water, food, shelter, sanitation services, and livelihoods assistance to people displaced by conflict, food prices have now risen by as much as 67 percent and fuel reserves are most likely sufficient to last only one to two months.

In the Horn of Africa, which includes Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya, more than 13 million people are already facing unprecedented hunger due to a catastrophic drought. Food and fuel prices are pushing people to the brink. Mercy Corps is supporting communities throughout this region with urgent supplies such as food, water, and cash.
Mercy Corps CEO Tjada D’Oyen McKenna recently appeared on CBS News to discuss how the war is impacting people everywhere. She shared that "the corn fields and the wheat fields of Ukraine have been turned into battlefields. We are seeing food shortages everywhere, an increase in prices, and even the little food that is getting out of Ukraine right now...is just invaluable."
