As MPs debated the Building Safety Bill on Wednesday, I was proud to join the ‘End Our Cladding Scandal’ protest outside Parliament. Accompanied by BrumLag and HemLag, along with campaigners across the country, we sent a powerful message to the Government. Nearly five years since the Grenfell tragedy, it is a scandal that thousands of families are still trapped in unsafe, unsellable homes that they bear no blame for, yet could be forced to pay thousands to repair. I have
campaigned to protect leaseholders from exorbitant cladding remediation costs at every stage of this Bill, and I voted on Wednesday again to do just that. Sadly, the Conservatives voted against Labour’s amendments that would have ensured all leaseholders, irrespective of circumstance, are protected from paying for a crisis they didn’t cause. As I said to campaigners at the rally, MPs would not be able to do their work without brilliant activists like the leaseholders at Hemisphere Apartments in my constituency. We did not get what we wanted on Wednesday, but this campaign has made some great gains along the way. Labour will continue to demand justice for every blameless
individual caught up in this scandal. |
