TOP STORY

Flower Mural, Community Conversation Honor Victims of Hate. On Tuesday, we joined family members of hate crimes victims at Columbus Circle in Washington, DC to show solidarity with and demand action for victims and survivors of hate crimes throughout the country. An interactive flower mural by artist Nikkolas Smith invited passersby to participate in revealing a powerful message, ultimately demanding that Congress pass the Jabara-Heyer NO HATE Act. Watch a timelapse video of the event here.

The following day, we held a community conversation with the families of Khalid Jabara and Matthew Shepard to discuss the epidemic of hate in our country and tangible actions for reform. The discussion was facilitated by Vanita Gupta, our president and CEO, and commemorated the 10-year anniversary of the passage of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. Civil Rights Groups Call for Stephen Miller's Removal. Last week, we sent a letter to President Trump on behalf of dozens of civil rights organizations demanding the immediate removal of White House advisor Stephen Miller. Our letter made clear that "supporters of white supremacists and neo-Nazis should not be allowed to serve at any level of government, let alone in the White House." We also called on Trump to halt his own "hateful actions and rhetoric and remove all hate enthusiasts from the administration." Read the full letter here.

More than 150 Groups Demand Voting Rights Reform. Along with 150 other civil rights organizations, we recently released a new policy platform, "Vision for Democracy: Fortifying the Franchise in 2020 and Beyond," which offers concrete policy recommendations to public officials, policy makers, and candidates for the 2020 state and federal elections - and proposes a unified vision for ensuring that Americans have a strong, functioning democracy. The platform outlines six major pillars of reform and calls on federal elected officials to pass the Voting Rights Advancement Act and the For the People Act - two major legislative measures proposed in the 116th Congress to kick start comprehensive fixes to our democracy.
