This Earth Day, we’re reflecting on the fact that weather-related events displace roughly 30 million people each year and how, in our own country, communities of color and low-income households are bearing the brunt of the effects of the climate crisis. These communities, for example, are more likely to live in areas with heavy pollution and become ill or die of environmental causes.
This has to change. Our leaders must listen to the voices of immigrants, communities of color, Indigenous people, and others—those who have solutions to the problems—and center those communities within climate conversations. A healthy democracy is essential to a healthy climate.
