Celebrate Earth Day with CFT’s newest publication - The Climate File
In celebration of Earth Day, we are happy to announce the newest publication from the CFT Labor and Climate Justice Education Committee – The Climate File. This new booklet is designed to introduce students to the climate crisis that is engulfing the Earth and its inhabitants — animal, plant, and human.
Actually, it’s a series of starting points for further reading and research, for organizing and for effective action on climate justice. The sooner all of us, especially young people become informed and active, the better future for all of us.
The Climate File is appropriate for middle school grades and up. For more on how you can celebrate Earth Day in the classroom, check out these resources from Share My Lesson.
Cerritos College faculty rally as contract talks with college administrators reach impasse
On Tuesday, over 100 Cerritos College faculty and dozens of students and classified staff supporters rallied before the Cerritos College Board of Trustees meeting.
After more than fifteen months at the bargaining table, negotiations between the Cerritos College Faculty Federation and Cerritos College administration have reached an impasse. Faculty are fed up with the slow pace of negotiations and upset over the college district's low salary offer despite growing reserves.
CCFF union President, Dr. Lynn Wang is hopeful the successful rally will convince the Cerritos College administration to settle a contract that recognizes the contributions of all faculty to the success of the students and the college.
“Cerritos College faculty have been there time and again for our students both before and during the pandemic,” said Dr. Wang. “But instead of investing in the faculty, the college administration has instead taken a hardball approach at the bargaining table.”
CFT President Jeff Freitas appointed to statewide task force on declining K-12 enrollment
This week State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond announced the creation of a new statewide task force to address declining K-12 student enrollment in California. Along with other statewide education leaders, CFT President Jeff Freitas was named co-chair of the task force.
Nationwide data show that declining enrollment plagues public schools across the country and recent figures released by the California Department of Education (CDE) show that California is no exception.
The task force will take up the issue of declining enrollment and offer recommendations and technical assistance to districts to help offset the challenges it poses. Under the leadership of Superintendent Thurmond and the co-chairs, the task force will focus on data analysis to understand trends related to the decline, including from which districts students are leaving and to where they are going.
