“What can you do for the environment?”

As I travel across Maryland speaking to voters about their priorities and my vision for the Attorney General’s office, this question comes up everywhere. It is clear that as we confront the growing impacts of climate change, Marylanders are committed to safeguarding our environment.

So on Earth Day today, I wanted to share my commitment to protect the environment with you here.

Every Marylander deserves access to clean water, clean air, and the security of knowing that their future and their children’s futures are secure from the existential threat of climate change.

The Chesapeake Bay is a national treasure that has shaped Maryland’s communities and economy. There are 110,000 miles of creeks, rivers, and streams flowing into the Chesapeake, which means that nearly every Marylander encounters and is affected by its waterways, we impact the Bay every day, and we all have a stake in making sure our waters are clean.

We must also be focused on environmental justice and repairing the harms done by environmental hazards such as air pollution, lead exposure, and improper waste disposal that impact tens of thousands of Maryland families every year and most often disproportionately impact Black and brown communities and increase racial health disparities.

I firmly believe that climate change is one of the gravest national security threats we face. We need to invest in renewable energy, cut greenhouse emissions, and build 21st-century infrastructure that prioritizes clean, green transportation.

From my years in the General Assembly to my time as Lt. Governor to Congress, we’ve worked side by side with advocates to protect the environment, clean the Bay, and secure Maryland’s green future. I even successfully stood up to Trump when his administration planned to allow offshore drilling and eliminate funding for the Chesapeake Bay Program.

As Attorney General, I promise to continue to take up that fight every single day. I will advocate for more environmental enforcement authority to protect against polluters and support legislation that builds upon the strength of the Climate Solutions Now Act which was just passed by the General Assembly. Earth Day is a call to action – to commit ourselves to fight for progress. And that call must be taken up by our public servants because all of Maryland deserves clean water, clean air, and a climate-resilient future.
