Dear neighbor:
Earlier this week, I was honored to join Vice President Kamala Harris, elected officials, and military members at the Vandenberg Space Force Base. As Co-Chair of the California Aerospace Caucus, I was pleased to hear the Vice President reaffirm this Administration’s commitment to prioritizing both civilian and military space. I’m proud that California – and Southern California in particular – play such a vital role in U.S. space operations.
As we watch in horror as Russia continues its war against Ukraine, I led a letter with Representatives Abigail Spanberger and Tom Malinowski this week urging the State Department to officially designate Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism. We now know that Vladimir Putin is leveraging non-state groups engaged in terrorist activity to achieve his political objectives. Officially designating Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism would give the U.S. additional tools to hold Russia accountable. Read our full letter here.
Here are a few more government oversight items I’ve been working on this week:
- Introduced a bill to protect Americans’ privacy by requiring government entities to obtain a warrant before accessing someone’s metadata stored on the cloud. Read more about my bill in the Washington Post here.
- Sent a letter with Senator Ron Wyden requesting information on the Justice Department’s use of secrecy orders, which prevent technology companies from notifying their customers if their personal data has been obtained by the government.
