Happy Earth Day!
On this Earth Day, I wanted to take a few minutes to reflect on our movement’s fight for bold climate action, and to ask for your financial support in powering that fight. But before I ask, please let me continue:
The first Earth Day 52 years ago saw mass demonstrations and led to sweeping changes — including the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. Now, as we face a global climate emergency, it is our responsibility to continue to build a more inclusive climate action and environmental protection movement for this generation.
Today, I’m writing to you to reconfirm my commitment to bold, ambitious action to combat this crisis, and so that we can save lives in the communities that have been pushed to the margins, discriminated against, and made to suffer the worst impacts of pollution and environmental destruction for far too long.
The truth is that the climate crisis does not and will not affect all of us equally. Black, Brown, and Indigenous people, the working class, the poor, immigrants, and people of color across the world are facing a severe and dangerous climate future.
It is our duty as activists, organizers, political leaders, and people of conscience to listen to the voices of marginalized communities and people who are calling out for environmental justice. To direct resources, action, aid, and investments, and to respond to the threat they are facing at the scale this crisis demands.
Tackling the climate crisis and addressing this history of injustice will not be easy. But so long as we stand together in solidarity, we can chart a new course to a more prosperous and secure future, leaving no one behind.
With a Democratic Congress and White House, and with all of us organizing around the principles of a Green New Deal — jobs, justice, and climate action — we can reclaim our leadership of the most important issue facing humankind and build the future that all of us deserve.
But the truth is that doing so takes an incredible amount of resources. Especially when the fossil fuel giants, dark money super PACs, and the billionaires who fund them are lined up to do and spend whatever it takes to stop our movement’s fight for justice.
So, here’s the part where I have to ask:
Although this crisis is an existential one, I know for certain that together, we are capable of organizing a movement in the streets and in the halls of power all across the world to confront it, and build a just and livable future for all.
Thank you for being a part of our fight. You are the leaders of this movement, and I will always stand with you.
In solidarity,
Ed Markey
