Today is meaningful for me. The Day of Silence is an annual day of action to spread awareness about the silencing of LGBTQ+ students.

Across the country, LGBTQ+ students and allies will take a vow of silence to protest the harmful impact of bullying, harassment, and discrimination on LGBTQ+ people in schools.

They break their silence at the end of the day to share their stories and experiences and advocate for ways their schools and communities can be more inclusive of the LGBTQ+ community.

This year’s Day of Silence is particularly poignant given the passage of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill and the introduction of more than 200 anti-LGBTQ+ pieces of legislation across the United States just this year.

As a gay man, this hits close to home. Growing up in Whitehall, New York, I was lucky to be surrounded by a supportive and loving community. I am so grateful for that privilege but know it is not one afforded to everyone. That is why I will always fight for the full equality and acceptance of my community.

Today, I encourage reflection on how we can better support, include, and respect the LGBTQ+ community, particularly LGBTQ+ youth.
