This Earth Day, I can’t think of a better way to celebrate our planet than by taking action to protect it and fight for its future. Today, I’m doing that by reaffirming my support for a Green New Deal.

I joined Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Ed Markey to reintroduce the landmark Green New Deal resolution to the new Congress last year.

The Green New Deal lays out a 10-year transformational framework that would put millions to work in green jobs modernizing our infrastructure, reduce air and water pollution, and make environmental justice a national priority.

In California, the effects of the climate crisis are already here. We see them in the form of devastating wildfires, prolonged droughts, coastal flooding, extreme heat, and more severe weather events — and climate scientists have warned that we are running out of time to address it.

Nothing short of swift, bold mobilization is required to tackle this challenge head-on — especially for the communities of color and low-income communities who suffer the most severe health and economic impacts due to generations of environmental racism.

The Green New Deal is climate policy, economic policy, racial justice policy, and so much more. It is the most sweeping legislation ever brought forth to meet the urgency of this moment, and I’m counting on you to help me build a groundswell of support for the Green New Deal this Earth Day.

We must match the scale of the climate crisis with a bold, comprehensive plan to promote environmental justice and put our country on a path toward sustainability — and that’s exactly what the Green New Deal does.
