Happy Earth Day!

I hope you’re taking some time today to connect with nature in your favorite way. Taking a leisurely walk outdoors, watching your pollinator garden abuzz with spring activity, or volunteering to clean up a local park are just a few small ways we can recharge our batteries and remind ourselves what we’re fighting to protect.

Every $1 you donate before midnight will be matched with $2 more to set the U.S. on a path to zero-pollution transportation, slash methane pollution, and boost our planet’s incredible natural ability to stabilize our climate when its forests, soils and oceans are healthy and protected.

EDF’s scientists and policy experts recently collaborated on a major undertaking: A new strategic plan to guide EDF’s work over the next decade, designed to maximize the real-world impact of every single dollar contributed by generous and dedicated EDF members like you. 

Vision 2030 identifies the most effective things we can do right now to stabilize our climate and strengthen our ability to thrive on this planet — in harmony with nature — for generations to come. 

And if you take advantage of our $2-for-$1 match before midnight tonight, every $1 you give this Earth Day will go even further than normal - three times as far - to:
 
  1. Lock in the policies and investments necessary for cars, trucks, ships and planes to reach net zero climate pollution by 2050. Transportation is not only the world’s fastest-growing source of climate pollution - it’s also a major source of deadly air pollution that disproportionately harms low-income communities near airports, trucking routes and other transportation infrastructure. Meeting this goal has the potential to improve the health of hundreds of millions of people and avoid ~0.06°C (0.1°F) of warming by 2050.
  2. Cut global methane pollution by 30%, focusing on the biggest sources: oil and gas, coal mines and livestock. While methane doesn’t persist in the atmosphere quite as long as carbon, it’s up to 84 times more powerful over the first 20 years after being emitted. Slashing methane pollution is the fastest, most efficient and most affordable way to slow warming now. Meeting this goal can avoid ~0.15°C (~0.3°F) of warming by 2050, and represents our best hope to prevent the total loss of summer sea ice that polar bears and other arctic wildlife need to survive.
  3. Reduce carbon pollution from the destruction of natural ecosystems to near zero. Healthy forests, soils and oceans could deliver a whopping 20% or more of the emissions reductions and carbon removal needed to reach net-zero climate pollution globally. By protecting tropical forests and driving widespread adoption of climate-smart farming and fishing methods, we’ll avoid ~0.13°C (~0.2°F) of warming by 2050 and bring food security and sustainable access to clean water to hundreds of millions of people worldwide.
 

It's not too late yet to avoid the deadliest and most devastating effects of runaway climate change. But without a critical mass of people coming together to work towards these goals, they’ll never leave the pages of Vision 2030.
