** Gwynne marks Earth Day by backing Young Climate Warriors Initiative
------------------------------------------------------------

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has marked Earth Day 2022, and backed the new Young Climate Warriors initiative to get young people involved in protecting the planet.

Young Climate Warriors is a nationwide charity which supports teachers and families with high quality and thought-provoking climate change resources that are free, ready-to-use and include weekly age-appropriate carbon-cutting and sustainability challenges.

The new Ambassador Programme is being launched on 22nd April to coincide with Earth Day 2022. It will take Climate Change discussions into primary schools across the UK, with in-person animated assemblies helping teachers open the door to the subject, building wider awareness of the problem and sharing solutions to fixing it.

Commenting on the initiative, Andrew Gwynne said:

“I can’t think of a better way of marking Earth Day than by backing this fantastic initiative.

I have always believed in taking action to protect our planet. That’s one of the reasons I helped found Friends of the Tame Valley, and worked hard to keep our local area green and clean.

Young people are our future, and Young Climate Warriors will give them the tools and the resources they need to understand climate change, as well as possible solutions.

I would encourage any local primary schools that are interested to get involved. We can all make a difference.”

** The importance of community in tough times - my weekly article for the Tameside Reporter
------------------------------------------------------------

Things are tough for lots of people right across Tameside, and indeed across the whole country. With inflation rising, cost of living soaring, and energy bills reaching stratospheric levels, I totally understand that for many people its difficult to see the forest for the trees.

Over the Easter weekend, I spent a lot of time thinking and reflecting on the current cost of living crisis. It is easy to feel overwhelmed by the deluge of difficulties that people are having to face. Whilst it is my job as an MP to push to Government to do more and to help people in Tameside, I am also struck by the incredible things that local people are doing to help one another.

Whenever I feel cynical and frustrated at the state of national politics, I’m always reminded of the incredible things that people are doing on a daily basis to make a difference.

Take Pauline Town, for example, who I’ve written about in the past. Pauline has been helping out homeless people and handing out free lunches from her pub, The Station in Ashton-under-Lyne, for almost a decade. She now has around 100 regulars and is doing incredible work in supporting people who would otherwise be ignored.

She was recently awarded an MBE, and I can’t think of anyone more deserving of the honour.

Tameside Council also have a useful list which sets out the current food support in the borough. This includes Tameside East Foodbank, as well as The Bread and Butter Thing, a charity that aims to make life more affordable for people on low incomes. There is also St Mary’s Church & Community Food Bank in Haughton Green, which has grown into a three-times-a-week emergency food provision service for those across Tameside.

Of course, it almost goes without saying that these kinds of initiatives shouldn’t be necessary, and that people who need it should be supported by the Government. One day, I hope to see a day when they won’t be necessary. Until then, however, it is really inspiring to see local people stepping up and changing lives.

People like Pauline really inspire me, and I would encourage any residents who are watching this crisis unfold and feeling helpless, to get involved with the various volunteering groups across the community.

We are living in difficult times, but if we continue to stick together and look out for one another, we can and will make a difference.

** Gin-credible delights in Stockport Old Town 🍸
------------------------------------------------------------

A big thank you to Paul and Cheryl at Stockport Gin ([link removed]) for inviting me to see their brilliant shop and distillery in Stockport old town.

This company was established in 2018 and already is established as a local success story for the town. They even managed to successfully diversify to an online offer over lockdown.

Their products are top class, and include an amazing citrus gin produced for Selfridges.
Please visit them and support them if you can!

** A wonderful Easter Vigil ✝️
------------------------------------------------------------

Last week, I went to a beautiful Easter Vigil Mass at St. Hilda’s Church in Audenshaw, presided over by Bishop Mark.

The Easter Vigil always brings happy memories - not just from the joy of the Easter message - but because I always went with my Grandad and Nanna to the Easter Vigil at Holy Innocents Church in Fallowfield as a child. As church warden, my Grandad had the responsibility for lighting the fire from which the Paschal Candle is lit. 🔥

📺 WATCH: Parliament is debating an emergency cross-party motion to refer the Prime Minister to the Committee of Privileges for lying to the House of Commons on several occasions over lockdown Downing Street parties.

Restoring trust in politics matters and following the rules of the House (and enforcing those rules when broken) matters too.

📺 WATCH: In Health Questions, I come in on a question about tackling health inequalities.

The undeniable facts are these inequalities are widening across England and are set to worsen as the cost of living crisis squeezes the poorest even further.

The Secretary of State is living in another world.
🗣️ I was really pleased to be asked to speak on Wednesday at the launch of Diabetes UK ([link removed]) 's new report 'Diabetes is serious'. They launched the report alongside an art exhibition, which showcased the incredible work of those living with diabetes.

1 in 3 people had no contact with their diabetes healthcare team during 2021. 4.9 million people are now living with diabetes in the UK.

There is an urgent need for the Government to develop a plan to address the crisis in diabetes care. A plan that emphasises early intervention alongside a proper NHS and workforce strategy.👨🏼‍⚕️

🐕 It was great to pop in to the Guide Dogs UK ([link removed]) event in Parliament earlier this week to support their #AllThingsEqual ([link removed]) campaign.

There are over 400,000 children and young people across the UK with a vision impairment and they all deserve an equal chance to learn.

It’s really important that we ensure all children have access to the best educational opportunities, and I appreciate the young people and their families for travelling to Parliament today to explain some of the difficulties faced by them, and what we can do to put things right.

I’m a huge supporter of the work of Guide Dogs UK and I, of course, got the obligatory photo with one of their gorgeous dogs.

📺 WATCH: Thanks to Granada Reports ([link removed]) for giving Maria Romanenko the opportunity to tell the story of her incredible and heartbreaking journey.

Maria is a journalist from Ukraine, who was forced to flee after the Russian invasion.

She joined her partner Jez here in Reddish, and I’m so proud that my office were able to help and support her.🇬🇧 🇺🇦
