Yesterday, our team wrote to you about Pennsylvania’s appellate courts and the attempts to strip away our power to choose the judges and justices who sit on those benches. Today, I’d like to talk to you about another disturbing attack on our voting rights.
In 2020, Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court made a ruling that led to the implementation of ballot drop boxes which expanded voting access and improved voter turnout. That meant underrepresented and often ignored communities, including communities of color, came out and voted in record numbers.
The latest attack on our democracy would do away with ballot drop boxes entirely, only allowing ballots to be hand-delivered to the county board of elections directly or mailed in (requiring postage). It’s no coincidence this bill disproportionately impacts these same communities who are already left out of the democratic process.

Access to ballot drop boxes are just as essential as access to the ballot itself. Under this proposed law, even dense population centers like Philadelphia would have only one drop-off point for over a million and a half people.
This bill is a direct continuation of the attacks on our courts and the progress their rulings have made for voting rights. We must engage and empower new voters if we are to protect free and fair elections. When our democracy and our voting rights are under a sustained attack, our work is more vital than ever before.
