Violeta Jr. and Violeta Sr. came to the U.S. as asylees in 2016 with just a suitcase between them.
Both were relieved, but a part of them wondered if they were really safe. “We were still very afraid,” Violeta Jr. says thinking of the gang violence they fled in El Salvador. Violeta Jr. was studying nursing and Violeta Sr. was working as a health care professional there. Often Violeta Sr. worried that her daughter would get caught in a crossfire or be kidnapped. But she put on a brave face and hoped that one day a window of opportunity would present itself.

Luckily it did.
With the help of the IRC, Violeta’s husband was able to petition for his family to join him and resettle in the U.S. Finally, the family would be safe and together. The IRC, with the support of people like you, also helped Violeta Sr. and Violeta Jr. find jobs and grow in their careers. Today, they work together at a nursing center specializing in rehabilitation.
“We like to go to work together because we can help each other out,” says Violeta Sr. “We love being mother and daughter.”

Violeta Sr. says of her and her daughter’s approach to life:
“You have to remember that not everything is given to you. You have to work hard, and working hard helps you forget about all the pain you went through. Think about your future. Don’t be a burden and always focus on doing the right thing. That’s our strength.”
Help TWICE as many families like them around the world this Thanksgiving by making a gift now>
