The latest in our fight for reproductive freedom.
ACLU Supporter –
With the Supreme Court poised to dismantle or completely overturn Roe v. Wade in the next few months – anti-abortion politicians are emboldened and rushing to pass whatever bans they can in their state legislatures.
But we'll be clear: The ACLU is here to protect everyone's ability to get the abortion care they need – regardless of what state or territory they live in. We're not going anywhere.
In the past couple of weeks alone, our legal and advocacy teams – along with coalition partners and activists nationwide – have been pushing back against attacks on abortion across the states.
And because you are key to this work, we wanted to make sure you were kept apprised. Here's your quick rundown of the past two weeks' most urgent developments:
We're suing in Kentucky: After the state passed a law that had the effect of banning all abortions, together with Planned Parenthood, the ACLU went to court. We are happy to announce because of a ruling by a federal court yesterday, abortions can resume in Kentucky today. But this is just the beginning, and the court fight will continue.
We'll see Florida in court: Governor Ron DeSantis recently signed an extreme bill criminalizing doctors who provide abortion care in Florida after 15 weeks of pregnancy. We will go to court to stop this law from taking effect and to protect Floridians' rights against this cruel attack on their bodily autonomy.
Abortion bans halted in Ohio and Nebraska: In Ohio, we went to court and stopped the state from using bogus arguments to shut down clinics in the state. Meanwhile, in Nebraska, our affiliate, its partners, and activists like you stopped the state from its attempt to pass a total ban on abortion. State-by-state wins like these will be needed in the months ahead to protect safe, accessible abortion care for all.
ACLU Supporter, when states ban abortion, they force us to remain pregnant against our will. The impact of these bans is felt most acutely by those with the fewest resources and the least access to health care. That's why we're holding our lawmakers accountable in courts and legislatures, not just in the states above, but in Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma, and so many others where egregious abortion attacks are cropping up.
And we will keep doing everything in our power to protect your right to abortion – and ensure that people can get the essential care they need no matter what.
Thank you for being with us in this pivotal moment, and stay tuned for further updates in the fight for reproductive freedom.
In solidarity,
Jennifer Dalven
