Today is Earth Day, which means your inboxes and news feeds are probably inundated with bad news about our warming planet. But how is climate change impacting us, right here in PA? Here’s a quick rundown:
How the Climate Crisis Hits PA
- More flooding
- Increased heat and respiratory deaths
- Disease and pests increase
- Disrupted agricultural systems
When I learn about disaster or suffering, I want to roll up my sleeves and get right to work helping folks who’ve been impacted and ensuring others aren’t hurt in the same way.
This is why I was proud to secure $1 million in federal funding to create a program that will help clean the Schuylkill River. I am also working hard to identify areas of federal funding to help Eastwick, a neighborhood in Philadelphia that has experienced decades of mismanagement, industrial misuse, and environmental racism that has perpetuated generations of environmental and health inequities.
I am also ready to build on the work done by my colleague, Rep. Madeleine Dean, when I start representing Norristown after redistricting. Norristown faces significant flooding concerns, greatly exacerbated by the global climate crisis.
I know there is more to be done and I promise to do what I can in Congress to push for real, tangible action on our climate crisis nationwide and here at home.
If you are looking for ways to get involved yourself, here’s a few ideas to get you started:
- Volunteer with the Pennsylvania Sierra Club. I’m proud to earn the Sierra Club Endorsement and look forward to our continued partnership in building a more sustainable future.
- Volunteer with the Pennsylvania League of Conservation Voters. I’m proud to be LCV-endorsed and am grateful for the important work they do!
- Donate to my campaign to keep a climate advocate in Congress. With the primary around the corner and the midterms just months away, we need all hands on deck to make sure we can bring bold climate action to Congress next term.
Call me crazy, but I believe that protecting our planet for future generations should be our focus year round — not just during Earth Week. Get involved to ensure that your great-grandchildren have a healthy world to live in.
Sincerely,
Mary Gay
