Hi —

This Earth Day, I’m thrilled to share that Pennsylvania just took a historic step forward in addressing our climate crisis and building a 21st century green economy!

That’s because the state’s Legislative Review Board just published rules that allow us to finally join the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), a carbon reduction program that improves air quality and addresses the climate crisis by requiring fossil fuel power plants to pay for their pollution.

Getting Pennsylvania to join RGGI has been one of Conservation Voters of PA’s top priorities, and we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate this incredible victory on a day when billions of people around the globe are taking action for the health of our planet. Over the course of nearly three years, we reached out to tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians through emails, texts, and social media to keep the pressure on our lawmakers — and we’re finally seeing it pay off.

This is what people power looks like, and we can’t thank you enough.

Governor Wolf also deserves tremendous credit for taking this historic step forward to protect Pennsylvania and the planet for future generations. He consistently stood up against unprecedented opposition from Republicans in the legislature and fought for YOUR best interests. Will you take a moment to sign our message thanking him for taking bold climate action by supporting RGGI?

We’re already seeing the harmful effects of climate change all around us, and the science shows that we’re running out of time to avert a climate disaster. Pennsylvania is the third largest emitter of greenhouse gasses in the country, which makes joining RGGI the single most impactful step our state has taken to reduce carbon pollution.

RGGI will also provide an economic boost for Pennsylvania and create good-paying union jobs as we invest in projects that reduce energy costs for working families, seniors, and local businesses and expand access to green, renewable energy like wind and solar. In fact, estimates show that it would generate a net increase of more than 27,000 jobs and add nearly $2 billion to the state’s economy by 2030. In terms of public health, RGGI will prevent 639 premature deaths and mean 30,000 fewer hospital visits in Pennsylvania. [1]

But the fight doesn’t end here. Big polluters and corporate special interests have pulled out all the stops to try to block Pennsylvania from joining RGGI, working hand in glove with their cronies in the legislature.

We need Governor Wolf to stand firm and support the program while our legal partners protect it in the courts, especially as we begin to work together on a plan for wisely spending the hundreds of millions of dollars in proceeds that Pennsylvania is going to receive from the program. Sign our thank-you message today so that he knows that Pennsylvanians support RGGI and bold climate action [[link removed]]
