One year after its House passage, a bill that would grant the District of Columbia statehood remains stalled in the Senate. And the longer the Senate waits to act on this bill, the longer residents of D.C. are denied equal representation in Congress.
Under the status quo, residents of D.C. – a population that is more than 40 percent Black – continue to be treated as second-class citizens and are denied full representation and a voting voice in deciding their futures and the direction of our nation. In a country that portrays itself as the world’s leading democracy, we cannot allow this racial and political oppression to continue.
D.C. residents have all the responsibilities of full citizenship: they pay taxes, they serve on juries and in the U.S. military, and work hard to build safe, strong communities where they live. And yet, the more than 700,000 people who call D.C. home have no vote in any of the decisions that their Congress makes every day. In fact, Congress reviews every law D.C. passes as well as the D.C. budget, something no state is subjected to.
We can’t allow the day-to-day governance of the District of Columbia to be subject to the whims of Congress – D.C. residents deserve to have a say in how they’re governed and that includes voting representation in Congress!
