John -

The very first Earth Day was organized in 1970 as an "environmental teach-in," with the goal of educating people about the need to protect the environment. Activists were concerned about growing environmental threats, and wanted to mark a day to educate and organize people to take action in their local communities. There were academic lectures, community service events, and President Nixon even planted a tree on the White House lawn to celebrate Earth Day.

It's no secret that in the 52 years since the very first Earth Day, the threats to our planet have grown more severe. Scientists around the globe are united in the belief that humanity needs to do everything it can to keep warming under 1.5º Celsius in order to stave off the worst effects of the climate crisis.

Despite the urgency of the threats to the Earth, on this Earth Day, I have never been more hopeful about our chances to actually succeed.

Yes, we are facing an increasingly narrow window to reverse the effects of climate change. Yes, we are up against the seemingly limitless power and wealth of Big Oil.

Why am I hopeful? Because there has never been a more robust, energized, and well-organized movement to save the Earth than there is right now. And that's how we'll win.

That's thanks to you. Even by reading this email right now, you're doing your part to stay involved in the fight against the climate crisis. Every petition signature, phone call, and action organized is a building block for our campaign for the Earth.

So, John, I want to ask you to do one more thing to celebrate Earth Day today and to help build our movement.

We have a goal of raising $350,000 by midnight tonight. We're still a little short, but that's OK. Because I know that if enough people donate today in honor of the Earth, we can hit our goal, continue to build our movement, and save our planet.

Can you make a $3.50 donation in honor of the Earth today? Whatever you can afford to donate, it will be a great gift for the planet.

Thank you so much for everything you do for our movement. It's easy to get discouraged in this fight — but that's what Big Oil wants.

I have never been more hopeful, more proud, or more excited about what's next for 350.org and our climate movement. Thank you for being a part of it.

For the Earth,

May Boeve
