US to Send Additional $1.3 Billion in Aid to Ukraine

New York Post: President Biden said Thursday the US is sending another $800 million in military aid to Ukraine, vowing that Washington would “speak softly and carry a large Javelin.” The Pentagon confirmed the package would include 72 155-millimeter Howitzers, 72 vehicles to tow the Howitzers and 144,000 artillery rounds. More than 121 tactical drones will also be sent to Ukraine, along with field equipment and spare parts (New York Post). ABC News: “To modernize Teddy Roosevelt’s famous advice, ‘Sometimes we will speak softly and carry a large javelin.’ Because we’re sending a lot of those in as well” (Twitter). Fox News: Biden also said the U.S. would provide $500 million in economic aid to Ukraine and announced a new program that would expedite legal immigration to the U.S. by Ukrainians who can be sponsored by a family or an NGO. And he said the U.S. would bar all “Russian-affiliated” ships from American ports (Fox News).

Florida Legislature Votes to Strip Disney of Special Privileges

From the story: The bill passed in a 70-38 vote and is now being sent to Governor Ron DeSantis’ (R) office to be signed into law after Florida’s Senate approved the measure yesterday. The special district, known as the Reedy Creek Improvement District, exempts Disney from numerous regulations and taxes and fees which reportedly saves the company tens of millions of dollars per year (Daily Wire). Greg Price: The Florida House has voted to revoke Disney’s special governing status as Democrats in the chamber throw a literal temper tantrum. It’s heading to DeSantis’ desk (Twitter). The Federalist: Disney is reaping its just reward for inserting itself into the political debate about Florida’s parental rights bill, which Disney lost in spectacular fashion. Republican governors and lawmakers across the country should be taking notes (Federalist).

CNN+ to Be Terminated

From the story: CNN+, the streaming service that was hyped as one of the most significant developments in the history of CNN, will shut down on April 30, just one month after it launched (CNN Business). Clay Travis: CNN+ is being shut down after losing hundreds of millions of dollars in less than a month because no one signed up. In one of the most disastrous media moves of all time, it turns out America wasn’t clamoring for more of Rex Chapman & Jemele Hill (Twitter).

China Continues to Pursue Covid Zero and Isolation Policies, Leading to Stagnant Cargo Supply Chains

From the story: The Chinese Communist Party is continuing with zero-Wuhan coronavirus policies by locking thousands of people into isolation centers (Townhall). The BBC Reports: A European business group says Western companies in Shanghai are facing a “logistical nightmare” as they start to reopen after a city-wide lockdown. The European Union Chamber of Commerce says that it expects the problems to last for several more weeks. Although some firms have restarted operations in Shanghai by having their employees remain on-site, “many companies still face the challenges of labour shortages and logistical difficulties,” said Bettina Schoen-Behanzin, vice president of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China and head of its Shanghai chapter. “We estimate that less than 30% of their workforce are eligible to go to work due to the ongoing lockdowns, so there’s a huge gap between policy and the reality of implementation,” she added in a statement on Thursday (BBC). Wall Street Journal: Trucking has been the worst hit, as strict local pandemic policies and arbitrary implementation of rules choke off the transport of goods. At Shanghai’s port, normally the busiest container port in the world, empty containers are stacked on docks waiting for trucks to deliver cargo. The logistics snarls in and around Shanghai further add pressure to an already battered global supply chain and to rising prices of goods in the U.S (Wall Street Journal).

Biden Forgoes Development of Tactical Nuclear Missile as Putin Unveiled Russia’s Latest

Putin Halts Mariupol Offensive: A Blockade to Starve Ukrainians?

From the story: Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his military to ditch its plan to storm the Azovstal steel plant in the besieged city of Mariupol, where several thousand Ukrainian troops as well as civilians are encamped, opting instead to continue to seal off the facility via blockade. Russia’s desire to show “significant successes” in the war ahead of its Victory Day on May 9 could affect how “quickly and forcefully” it attempts to conduct military operations in Ukraine (CNBC). Anastasiia Lapatina: Putin ordered Shoigu to call off the attack on Azovstal in #Mariupol, saying they must first and foremost think about saving the lives and health of Russian soldiers. Instead Putin wants Azovstal totally blockaded (Twitter).

Russia to Israel: Do Not Send Aid to Ukraine, Or Else

Times of Israel: Russia’s envoy to Israel warned Thursday that Moscow will respond if Jerusalem supplies Kyiv with defensive gear amid his country’s invasion of Ukraine. Speaking with Russian state television, Ambassador Anatoly Viktorov noted Defense Ministry Benny Gantz’s announcement a day earlier that Israel will provide Ukraine with helmets and flak jackets. It was not clear from Viktorov’s remarks what such a response might entail (Times of Israel).

Lesson for Disney: “You Get What You Ask For”

From the story: Republican voters who have watched companies side with the progressive agenda and silence employees who disagree are fed up. Disney’s political foray didn’t stop the Florida law. But it made a lot of people mad, including Disney customers and state lawmakers. There’s a warning here to other companies, especially Big Tech and Wall Street, which are mainly based in liberal states but conduct business everywhere. If they try to impose their cultural values, they risk losing Republican allies on the policy issues that matter most to their bottom lines, such as regulation, trade, taxation, antitrust and labor law (Wall Street Journal). Hugh Hewitt: Bravo @RonDeSantisFL. If @Disney wants to play politics, it should expect political consequences. Same happened to @Delta @CocaCola and @MLB when they dove into GA’s voting reform debate. You get what you ask for (Twitter).
