In today’s Oversight Committee hearing I asked the IRS Commissioner about
the huge gap between taxes paid by the ultra wealthy and those paid by the
rest of us.

Right now, a married couple making $200,000 with one child here in Irvine,
California pays taxes at a rate of 26%. That’s a higher rate than Bill
Gates or Jeff Bezos pays.

If the 15 richest Americans paid taxes at the same rate as families here
in Irvine, we’d bring in $1.1 billion dollars—money that can be invested
into schools, spent protecting our environment, and funding all sorts of
things in our community.

But in the last decade, we’ve lost thousands of IRS agents, resulting in a
66% decrease of audits on millionaires. The ultra-wealthy are taking
advantage of this lack of enforcement, with the top 1% of taxpayers
evading $163 billion in taxes.

If we could collect that $163 billion we could give every American a tax
cut of $1,000. That money could make a real difference for so many
families (personally, I’d buy a new dishwasher that actually cleans
things).

We can hold billionaires like Jeff Bezos accountable with laws that are
already on the books, but Congress needs to give the IRS the resources
they need to do so. Republicans have protected billionaires for long
