Friend,

This November, the American people will have a choice: vote in favor of upholding our democracy, or vote in favor of the GOP extremists working to undermine it – extremists like Sen. Josh Hawley.

My friend, Sen. Brian Schatz, recently made news for calling out Sen. Hawley's indefensible efforts to hold up President Biden's civilian nominees to the Department of Defense and to the Department of State – positions which are critical to our national security. A particularly absurd suggestion from Sen. Hawley was that the president's support for Ukraine was wavering.

Make no mistake: President Biden has been a central leader in organizing global support for Ukraine, and he just announced an additional $800 million in weapons, ammunition, and other security assistance to aid their defense. His support for Ukraine in their fight for freedom has been outstanding.

What has Hawley done? The contrast couldn't be more clear: He voted "no" on Ukraine aid and then attempted to pin the blame on this administration for moving too slowly to help our Ukrainian allies. Does he think we are not smart enough to notice his hypocrisy?

But this is just scratching the surface of his heinous record.

When Donald Trump was first impeached for withholding aid to Ukraine in order to pressure President Zelenskyy into doing him a political favor, Hawley voted to acquit him. When Trump incited a deadly insurrection to overturn the results of the 2020 election, Hawley raised his fist to show his support for the mob. And during Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson's historic Senate confirmation hearings, Hawley gave voice to far-right conspiracy theorists' baseless, despicable smears against her.

Sen. Schatz said it best: "Spare me the new solidarity with the Ukrainians and with the free world – because this man's record is exactly the opposite."

And yet, Josh Hawley is a leader in today's Republican Party – a party that is just one seat away from gaining control of the Senate. We cannot let the Senate fall to right-wing extremists. We cannot allow them the chance to dismantle our democracy and resume where they left off in their dangerous agenda – because that's exactly what they'll do if they retake the majority this November.

With Senate Republicans setting fundraising records, I'm asking you today to fight back: Will you donate $5 or more right now to defend the Senate for Democrats? The GOP only needs to flip one seat to take back control of the entire Senate, and I need every bit of grassroots support to protect my seat against my GOP challengers.

What happens in November will be a pivotal moment for our country and for our institutions. Thank you for stepping up today to help make sure democracy prevails.
