Dear Friend,
This month, the Biden administration announced it will end Title 42 on May 23rd. We applaud this decision which is well overdue. Under Title 42, people fleeing danger are refused entry at our border and denied their right to apply for asylum. The policy was put in place by the Trump administration to keep immigrants out. It must be revoked and children and families welcomed with dignity at our border.
Now, however, some lawmakers—including a growing number of pro-immigrant Democrats—are attempting to stop the Biden administration from ending Title 42. Many say they will only vote for more Covid-19 relief funding next week if the policy stays in place. Title 42 betrays this nation’s obligation to people seeking asylum. It puts people in danger and separates children from their families.
Help us remind Congress that our government has the capacity and resources to welcome people seeking safety at the border, protect public health, and keep children safe and with their families. Contact your Representatives and Senators today and ask them to reject any efforts to extend Title 42.
Here's a brief script you can personalize:
"Hi, My name is _________ and I'm Senator/Representative ___________'s constituent in __________. I'm calling to ask that the Senator/Representative reject any efforts to extend Title 42, including the Public Health and Border Security Act of 2022 (S.4036/H.R.7458) and potential amendments to the COVID-19 relief bill. Keeping Title 42 in place forces children and families into harm’s way. We as a country have the resources and capacity to put the best interest of children first by rejecting proposals that would endanger the lives of asylum-seekers."
Thank you for taking action,
Mary Miller Flowers Senior Policy Analyst for Child Protection
