Dear John,

Two weeks ago, I took a tour of the U.S.-Mexico border, concentrating on illegal immigration hot spots near McAllen, Texas. I want to tell you a little bit about it in the paragraphs below. BUT first, John, I want to ask you to donate to NumbersUSA Action to help us in the current border battle.

This battle is different from any we have had in a long time. The open-borders wing of the Democratic Party has finally pushed policies so radical that the nearly unanimous opposition to immigration enforcement among congressional Democrats the last few years has begun to crack. That opens important new opportunities for action.

I know money can be tight, and you can't give every time. But it's really important that I hear from you this time so we can help prevent the current chaos at the U.S.-Mexico border from exploding even further, and so we can work for longer-term solutions to actually bring order on the border.

Last year, NumbersUSA worked hard to block Pres. Biden's efforts to stick a massive amnesty in the Build Back Better bill. Pressure we put on Sen. Joe Manchin, including a specially commissioned public opinion poll of his state, was a big part of the reason Build Back Better ultimately failed. I think NumbersUSA delivered in a big way.

Would you consider pitching in $3 now to help us force Congress to fight for an end to the Administration-engineered border crisis?

This year HAD looked a bit more in control before recently. After a string of defensive victories last year, this year was looking quieter until the Title 42 controversy came along a couple of weeks ago.

Last month, Pres. Biden announced that he would allow the use of Title 42, a public health measure, to lapse in late May. The use of Title 42 expulsions began under Pres. Trump at the beginning of the COVID crisis, and it allowed arrested border crossers to be turned back to Mexico without hearing their asylum claims due to the presence of this communicable disease in foreign countries. Title 42 has been used to expel over 1.6 million illegals since being adopted in April 2020. This number includes 10,000 flown back to Haiti, for example.

Currently, about 7,000 persons a day are arrested after crossing our southern border, and about half have been expelled using Title 42. Clearly, the way Title 42 is being used by the Biden Administration is not enough as thousands of others a DAY have been allowed to continue their way into the nation's interior. If Title 42 ends as now scheduled, the Department of Homeland Security estimates that up to 18,000 border crossers could be arrested each day starting in late May, with most of them being released and allowed into the interior of our country.

That adds up to about 6.5 million new illegal aliens allowed into the U.S. each year if that many per day come!!!

EVEN WITH Title 42 in place, 209,906 illegal aliens were apprehended (arrested) in March, alone. That's the most apprehensions by the Border Patrol in a single month of this entire Administration! Unfortunately, this does NOT mean that these were sent back

Many Democrats in Congress are seeing their electoral doom in this scenario, and finally we have an issue that promises to split the Democrats on immigration policy. For NumbersUSA to move U.S. immigration policy in the right direction, it is critical that more-moderate Democrats begin to speak up for the views of their own voters back home who largely agree with us!

Since the White House's announcement on Title 42, NINE Democratic Senators, five of them up for reelection, have publicly called for Title 42 to be continued. They are saying it's irresponsible to end a policy without a plan to deal with the additional mass rush on the border everyone expects to happen once Title 42 is over. They are certainly correct on this!!!

CNN is calling the Democratic Senators' defection on Title 42 a "revolt."

Republicans are holding up passage of a $10 billion COVID funding measure in the Senate at least until Democrats agree to allow a vote on an amendment to delay the end of Title 42 while a "plan" is submitted. The White House and Sen. Schumer are fighting like crazy to stop this amendment from being considered, because if it comes up for a vote, the more-moderate Democratic Senators would probably vote for it.

Finally, there is some bipartisan alarm about the border! This is a moment of opportunity to seize while the focus of the national media and the political class is on the border chaos. And, thus, it is a time when NumbersUSA must fully mobilize its members to keep the heat turned up and daily remind their Senators and Representatives of the voters' majority demand to stop treating the border like a sieve. A time to bring to their attention all the measures that are needed to stop the international mocking of our southern border. Please go to your Action Board to see the actions you can take to get Congress

Vulnerable Senators making public statements is not enough to end the border crisis, or to deal with the damage already done during DHS Secretary Mayorkas' tenure. Let those Senators know that you appreciate them speaking out against the open border policies of the Biden Administration, but tell them that is not enough.

Title 42 is a good start, but here are bills that have been introduced in both chambers that would EFFECTIVELY END THE BORDER CRISIS. From our newsletter last Friday:

☀ Rep. Andy Biggs' (R-Ari.) H.R.1901 and Sen. Mike Lee's (R-Utah) S.884 introduced bills to address asylum fraud.
☀ Rep. Ken Calvert (R-Cal.) and Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) have introduced mandatory E-Verify bills into the House (H.R.78) and Senate (S.71) respectively.
(Go to your NumbersUSA Action Board to push your members of Congress to back these bills.)

The stakes in this battle are so high that a group of major donors have pledged a total of $77,000 to a special NumbersUSA Action Match Fund. So, for example, if you give a gift of $500, the major donors will match it dollar for dollar, meaning NumbersUSA Action gets a total of $1,000 to fight for a secure border. This works for donations of any size. These major donors will match your gift dollar for dollar up to $77,000 total!

John, can you pledge $3?

Now -- Here's my report on the border tour:

Week before last, Mark Krikorian of the Center for Immigration Studies, plus a philanthropic friend from California, and I traveled from Roma, Texas all the way down to where the Rio Grande meets the Gulf of Mexico at South Padre Island. We wanted to see the impact of the Trump border wall, plus we wanted to talk in person to Border Patrol officers, farmers and ranchers on the border, local political volunteers, and candidates for office.

(South Texas border area our tour followed, with the thin line being the Rio Grande River.)

Yes, there is a LOT of wall in place! Most of it looks about 20 feet high, though some is shorter and some taller. The biggest thing we noticed was that the wall had to be placed well back in U.S. soil for most of the parts we saw because the serpentine nature of the river bank made close contouring of it impractical. So, it was not uncommon to see the river a halfmile away from the river. This leaves a lot of U.S. farmland on the wrong side of the border wall.

As a result, they have many gates in the wall to allow farmers (and Border Patrol) to go back and forth. Obviously, this can create a security problem, as some of the gates are left open through much of the day. All the sections of wall we saw could be and were regularly crossed by smugglers mostly using plain rope ladders they throw to the top of the wall to catch the bars. As we drove mile after mile, inspecting sections of the wall, we saw many MANY Border Patrol agents in their trucks, doing their jobs. Also, we saw units of the Texas Guard and the Department of Public Safety. The vibe we got from all of them was cool but overwhelmed.

(right) Unfinished wall.

An outstanding site we saw at the Gulf was Elon Musk's Starbase, which is the rocket launching site for SpaceX. This is a spectacular site, with almost no security visible. You can almost walk right up to the rockets under construction. It was really fun, a throwback almost to earlier days of America's industrial might. Maybe it will be a strong part of our future as well.

We had a long dinner with an often-quoted Border Patrol agent and his wife. Chris is a Border Patrol officer involved with the Border Patrol officers union, which is why he can meet with outsiders like us. Chris gave us a lot of information about drug smuggling, human trafficking and how people get around and over the wall. He talked about the number of illegals getting arrested along the border each day -- about 7,000 -- and how the biggest number are being released into the country.

Chris reiterated that if Biden allows Title 42 to lapse next month Border Patrol officials are expecting as many as 18,000 to cross a day. My back of the envelope math says that adds up to about 6.5 million a year if that level of flow continues. Without Title 42 almost all of them will be immediately released into the interior of America with a bus ticket and smartphone to use to call in their whereabouts periodically. (This detail about the smartphones is tragically laughable, but quite true. They really are doing this!)

We also met with Joe and Sharon, who farm sugar cane and grapefruit on a farm right on the Rio Grande. They are among those whose land has the border wall running right through it. These are brave people, since almost every decision they make has to include the likelihood of running into illegal aliens crossing their land or vandalizing their stuff. It's a tense way of life. At another meeting we met with local voters who are very, very unhappy with continued illegal immigration and Washington's assumption that Hispanic Americans are somehow okay with that!

There's lots, LOTS more I could talk about. My bottom line impression is that the border area is impossible to guard with a presidential administration that really doesn't mind millions of new illegal immigrants coming into this country every year.

Anyway, John, without Title 42 allowing the Border Patrol to deport a large number of border crossers, every single person we met in South Texas believes everything will become chaos down there.

That's why I've worked with many of our major donors to raise a Matching Fund of $77,000. Everything you give to NumbersUSA Action now will be doubled!! This won't last forever, so please give now.

I'd love it if you could pitch in $3.

Many times, as I talk to NumbersUSA members on the phone, they ask, "When are you going to have another matching campaign so my gifts will be doubled?" Well, NOW is that time! Please give generously so we can hold the line down on the border.
