Dear John,
Inflation has jumped to an annual rate of 8.5 percent — the highest level since 1981.
This will be a disaster for Democrats in the midterm elections… unless we can effectively communicate to the American people why this is happening.
These are the key facts that Americans need to know:
- Corporate profits are at a 70-year high,
and yet companies continue to raise prices.
-
If corporations faced meaningful competition, they would keep prices low for fear of losing customers to lower-priced competitors.
-
Republicans are dead set against doing what's needed to solve the problem, like stronger antitrust enforcement and a temporary windfall profits tax on corporate profiteers.
Our team is working day and night to produce the most eye-catching and easy-to-understand videos and explainers to make sure the public realizes what’s really going on with inflation. And it’s working, as 82 percent of the American people now say corporate greed is driving up prices.
We need to expand this effort now before voters are convinced by Republicans' lies. Will you make a donation to Inequality Media Civic Action and help make sure the American people know the truth about the hidden link between inflation and corporate greed?
A new analysis shows Republicans are talking about inflation six times more than Democrats, and Republicans are hammering the message that inflation is all Joe Biden's fault and the problem is so-called "big government."
Nonsense.
In fact, Republican policies would only make things worse. They want to cut taxes on corporations and the super-rich, further weaken antitrust enforcement, and cut the social safety net programs that are keeping millions of Americans afloat in this economy.
But voters are rightly frustrated and looking for answers. Unless we're able to connect the dots and build support for the real solutions we need — i.e., cracking down on corporate concentration — Republicans will be able to capitalize in the midterm elections and win control of the House and Senate.
Here's the challenge we face: Most mainstream media outlets are deeply reluctant to share these facts because it cuts against the interests of their corporate bosses. That's why we must use the internet and social media to go around the corporate media and communicate directly to the American people.
Inequality Media Civic Action was created exactly for moments like this. We've built an online following of millions across virtually every platform, and we've spent years testing the most effective ways to get those messages out and make them go viral. But we rely on small donations from everyday people like you to power this important work.
Will you chip in and help us continue to produce and distribute our proven-effective videos to make sure the American people know the truth about inflation?
Thanks for helping us set the record straight,
Robert Reich
