Dear John,

This year’s Earth Day theme is ‘Invest in our Planet.’ There are as many ways to do that as there are people, but all of us have to take part in some way. The time has passed where we can take our planet’s health and livability for granted. However we are able, everyone needs to take action. As You Sow and our donors, partners, and supporters have been doing just that for 30 years. But despite major breakthroughs much, much more is needed.

As You Sow is directly addressing critical climate issues at scale:
• Calling on banks and insurance companies to adopt net-zero by 2050 emissions targets, with interim reductions in line with the Paris Agreement
• Compelling time-bound, net-zero targets and climate transition plans from oil and gas companies and other major emitters
• Pressing utilities to increase energy efficiency, switch to renewable energy, and account for upstream Scope 3 methane emissions from natural gas production
• Combatting the alarming explosion of petrochemical infrastructure, much of which is located in areas where extreme weather events pose severe physical threats

The latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concludes that climate change impact is intensifying so rapidly it is endangering society’s capacity to adapt and confirms that effects of the climate crisis are already being felt. Near-term actions are critical to reducing and avoiding damages.

Our Say on Climate initiative compels companies to establish robust net zero transition plans. For all the world’s countries to reach the Paris Agreement goals, every company needs to do its part. Say on Climate presents a standardized way to do this.
“Now is the time for transformational efforts from companies…Without effort at the scale that climate change merits, the global economy… will be gravely impacted” says Danielle Fugere, President, As You Sow.
Together, we are changing corporations from the inside out, to benefit us all. Thank you.
Yours for a just and sustainable future for the Earth,

Betsy McMahon
