John, did you see Kaylee's email? It's been 23 years since the massacre at Columbine High School, and its students are still left calling on Congress to pass common-sense gun safety legislation.

As a gun violence survivor, I know firsthand the lasting impact that these kinds of shootings have on people. And now as a mother, I have seen my kids experience lockdown drills because school shootings remain imminent. I know what it's like to lose someone you love to gun violence — and I would do anything to make sure my kids never share that experience. It's why I stay committed to the critical work that Brady does.

Yet in these 23 years since Columbine, there have been more than 300 school shootings — and nearly zero pieces of federal gun safety legislation signed into law. As a survivor, as a parent of school-aged children, and as someone who believes we can do more to save lives, I know this much: Congress needs to act to make our schools and communities safer. If they don't, they're failing our youth, full stop. But they won't do it without a massive groundswell of grassroots support.

With just hours until our midnight deadline, we're falling 236 signatures short of our goal. That's why I'm asking you personally: Will you sign our petition demanding Congress take action to stop school shootings?

John,

My name is Kaylee — I’m on the Team ENOUGH Executive Council. My high school, though, needs no introduction: Columbine.

The shooting at Columbine was the worst school shooting in United States history — in 1999. My high school’s name is one that people still remember to this day, but now, school shootings have become a strange normality. In 23 years, there have been literally hundreds of school shootings, and there were three that were even more deadly than Columbine.

Columbine changed everything — marked the start of a new generation of American students — one for whom lockdowns, shelter in place orders, and active shooter drills are standard. Two years ago, my school was among 20 that went into lockdown after a suspect made threats of gun violence.

But, friend, we have a chance to make a new generation safe from gun violence in their schools. We can remember and move forward.

My classmates and I have grown up with the trauma of what happened — like too many other schools. It’s deeply personal to me to fight every day to end school shootings and save young lives. That's why I'm reaching out: In honor of those we lost at Columbine and to keep fighting for those we can save, I'm asking for 5,000 gun violence prevention advocates to call on Congress to end America's gun violence epidemic: Will you sign Brady's new petition to demand Congress take action to stop school shootings?
