National Democratic Redistricting Committee April 2022 Status Update
*For supporters only*

Where are we now?
With the help of the fair redistricting movement, the NDRC has made significant progress toward leveling the playing field in congressional elections.

• “In a departure from a decades-long pattern in American politics, this year’s national congressional map is poised to be balanced between the two parties…” – The New York Times
• “The House Map’s Republican Bias Will Plummet In 2022…” – FiveThirtyEight
• “The GOP's gerrymandering scheme backfires” – The Washington Post

How did we get here?
Entering into the redistricting cycle, Attorney General Holder set out a comprehensive strategy. That strategy included shifting the balance of map drawing power ahead of the redistricting cycle, empowering voters to engage in the redistricting process, and fighting for fair maps in the courts when necessary. This work has been critical to achieving a more balanced congressional map and to stopping Republican attempts to gerrymander themselves to a majority.

What's next?
There are two choices in front of us. If we assume our work is finished, we risk Republicans reversing our hard-won victories. They are already laying plans to do this in 2022 by reelecting gerrymandering politicians, taking advantage of a conservative U.S. Supreme Court majority that has proven hostile to voting rights, attempting to stack state supreme courts, and promoting dangerous legal theories that undercut our federalist system.

The other choice is to keep fighting – which will require ongoing support from our grassroots community.
