John,
I was proud to vote YES on the MORE Act in the House this month, a bill
that would end the federal prohibition on cannabis by removing it from the
list of banned controlled substances and begin to rectify the decades of
failed policies that have derailed the lives of far too many of our
people.
Cannabis reform is a bipartisan issue with widespread support among the
majority of Americans. It’s already legal for adult use in 19 states
including California, and medically legal in 36 states despite the federal
prohibition. But while the legal cannabis industry generated $25 billion
in sales last year, devoting the tax revenue to public goods like roads
and schools, Washington is way behind the times.
It’s time for Congress to take action and remove cannabis from the federal
list of controlled substances so we can keep the federal government up to
date with state policies and address decades of injustice.
For far too long, convictions for minor nonviolent offenses have destroyed
lives, torn apart families, and led to the disproportionate incarceration
of people of color. By decriminalizing marijuana, we can make our justice
system fairer and start to rectify the damage of some of the most
destructive elements of the war on drugs.
The House already passed the MORE Act — now it’s the Senate’s turn.

Act. We need to make it clear that the vast majority of Americans demand
comprehensive cannabis reform.

Thank you for making your voice heard on this important issue. When we
come together to apply pressure and push for change, we can accomplish so
much.
My best,
