Today, Kat made a trip down to the DMV with a Veteran from a partner of our sister organization, Spread The Vote + Project ID.

It didn't go as planned.

The DMV employees rejected our client’s DD Form 214 over claims that it wasn’t a valid proof of identity. After Kat showed them that the DD-214 was listed as a valid proof of identity on their own website, they decided that it wasn’t an original copy because it didn’t have “punch holes”. It took Kat and the veteran quite a bit of wrangling and determination to get the form accepted at not one, but two different desks at the same DMV, before our client finally got his ID, with the veteran’s designation (that cost $5.12 and required a special form from the VA).

It wasn't nearly as easy as it should be, but this Veteran has an ID on the way. Many of our Vets aren't so lucky.

Identification is way too expensive and hard to get for many of the people who have served our country.

Project ID Action Fund has made Vets a priority through our #FreeIDsForVets movement. Kat and Jen are both "military brats," so watching Vets struggle to get the piece of plastic that they need to access basic social safety net programs is particularly enraging. Our Vets fought for our country. They shouldn't have to fight for IDs too! This is why we must get legislation passed to make it easier for Veterans to get IDs!
