Recommendations for Federal Stakeholders
A new Hasting Center issue brief makes policy recommendations on how to mitigate disparities in access to appropriate medical follow-up after the return of genetic findings to people from underserved populations who participate in the government’s “All of Us” research program. The recommendations are targeted to federal stakeholders on how to collaborate with federally qualified health centers to close the gap in access to precision medicine. Read more.
The Hastings Center also launched a website, Bioethics in Community Health, featuring the Center’s work on community health and immigrant health, with extensive links to resources for scholars, practitioners, and students.
Love, Loss, and Dementia Personal Decisions, Ethical Questions About Medical Aid-in-Dying
In a webinar last week, bestselling author Amy Bloom discussed how she and her husband Brian approached his diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and their decision to travel to Switzerland to access an assisted dying process unavailable in the United States. Hastings Center research scholar Nancy Berlinger followed with an overview of medical aid-in-dying laws in the U.S. and abroad and the ethical issues they raise. Watch the event.
Top Legal and Nursing Honors Hastings Center Fellows, Board Members Recognized
Michele Goodwin (left) was named a recipient of the American Bar Association’s 2022 Margaret Brent Awards, which recognize outstanding women lawyers who have achieved professional excellence and paved the way for other women in the legal profession. Goodwin is a Chancellor’s Professor of Law at the University of California, Irvine School of Law. Read more.
Cynda Rushton received the American Association of Critical Care Nurses distinguished career award for her efforts to address moral suffering, cultivate moral resilience and ethical practice, and improve end of life care. Rushton is the Anne and George L. Bunting Professor of Clinical Ethics in the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics and the School of Nursing. Read more.
