Richard Nixon began the failed war on drugs just over 50 years ago, and our communities have been paying the price ever since.

Today, many of the 2.3 million incarcerated Americans are there because of nonviolent drug offenses — often marijuana possession and use — which disproportionately impacts Black and Latino people.

So earlier this month, Hakeem helped pass the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement (MORE) Act through the House.

This legislation will end the criminalization of marijuana and facilitate the expungement of low-level federal marijuana convictions.

It’s time to deschedule and decriminalize marijuana, and it’s time to invest in the communities most impacted by the war on drugs.
