23 years ago today, the shooting at Columbine High School rocked our community.

Colorado knows the devastation of gun violence all too well. Many of those students are now parents, bearing the burden of seeing their kids impacted by gun violence at schools across America.

So little has changed in the past 23 years.

Politicians would rather take money from the NRA and stay silent than take action on gun safety — all while 36,000 Americans die from gun violence every year. Thoughts and prayers aren’t enough. We deserve action.

As a hunter and former Army Ranger, I know what guns are capable of. They’re a tool that should be respected, not toys that should be left unchecked.

Don’t be fooled by the gun lobby. We don’t have to choose between safer communities and protecting our second amendment rights. We must pass common-sense reforms to reduce gun violence, like background checks and closing loopholes.

Columbine, Aurora, and STEM school aren’t just names — they’re the victims, survivors, and families I represent. They still bear the scars of America’s failure to respond. They’re why I fight so hard for gun violence prevention legislation.

My priority in Congress is to work to stop the gun violence epidemic. I will always put our children, our families, and our communities first.
