I receive emails from people who tell me they'd consider nuclear war worth it if it killed a particular foreign official. I go on radio and tv shows where people accuse me of supporting whichever side of a war they are opposing. I speak to classes of young people who seem completely incapable of imagining abolishing war -- and are, in fact, passionately offended by the very idea.

I'll almost certainly receive none-too-friendly replies to this very email informing me that Russia has no other choice but war, and others informing me that Ukraine has no other choice but war.

When you start to imagine that war fever has engulfed the entire species, there is a simple solution. I recently visited a number of cities in the United States and Canada, and I got compliments wherever I went -- as if I were simply gorgeous or walking the cutest puppy ever. All I had to do was wear a sweatshirt with the words "I'm already against the next war."

"I like your shirt!" "Nice shirt!" "I agree!" "Hey, me too!"

Sometimes these develop into conversations. It's easy enough to tell someone where to get a similar shirt: just turn around, because the shirt has the World BEYOND War website on the back. If you want to get super master level about building the movement, you can not only wear a compliment-magnet shirt but also carry peace pledge sign-up sheets to get people's names and contact info. But if you just want to confirm that peaceful people are out there, all you have to do is wear the shirt.

If you need new reason to believe that working for humanity is worth it, that some part of humanity won't hate you for it, and that there are in fact tons of people everywhere who want to end war, these shirts work too:
